IDes 3606 Interior Design Studio VI (4 credits), offered fall semester only


Prerequisites: Completion of IDes 2604 Interior Design Studio IV with a minimum grade of C-.


Course Description

Interior design problems dealing with medium-scale spaces. Focuses on medium office design.


Course Objectives

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the concept of “work” and how it influences the design of the work environment.
  • Enhance understanding of the design process by experiencing pre-design through construction documents phases, building on existing competencies.
  • Understand characteristics and integration of building systems into the designed environment and their contributions to functional operations and support of occupants’ health, safety, and welfare.
  • Ability to program for the design of meaningful, safe (security), and productive workspaces for all occupants, including meeting accessibility guidelines and fulfilling universal design principles.
  • Exposure to concepts and components involved with the planning and implementation of systems furnishings.
  • Identify environmental issues (indoor air quality, noise, thermal conditions, light) that contribute to occupants’ health, safety, and welfare and develop design solutions to meet them.
  • Develop skills for integration of information obtained from reference materials, discussions, verbal presentations, and survey materials (interviews, observation, and questionnaires).
  • Understand the meaning of place and how it supports corporate culture.
  • Continue to develop individual and teamwork communication skills (written, verbal, and graphic) and contribute to class discussions.
  • Enhance communication skills, written, visual, and verbal.
